Ongoing logging trees with crossing fee imposed by Turkish-backed checkpoints

Afrinpost – Exclusive

The logging operations of fruit trees continue in the occupied region of Afrin, while the Turkish authorities and its backed militants turn a blind eye to it, and take advantage of this to impose a fee for crossing the firewood at the checkpoints.

Our reporter in Afrin said that IDPs living in Al-Maqam camp, next to the village of Kortek / Al-Hafrah in Sharan district, logged today, Wednesday 11/30/2022, 40 fruit trees, mostly olive trees, in addition to some walnut trees, adding that the trees belong to the Kurdish civilian Haider Alo.

The reporter added that the issue of logging has turned into a source of earning money, whether through trading in it or passing through the security checkpoints, as the Turkish-backed Military Police security checkpoints collect a transit fee of one hundred Turkish lira from each car loaded with firewood, ignoring the decision issued by the local council banning logging, which was issued after the circulation of videos of the illegal logging in the forests overlooking Lake Maidanki, where the area turned into barren spaces without trees.
